UNITAR’S KEY PRESENCE AT COP27 FOR SHARING EXPERTISE ON HUMANITARIAN ENERGY

As UNITAR contributes to the implementation of the SDGs,
a delegation participated at the COP27 to organize side events, workshops, and bilateral meetings to bring attention on the ‘leave no one behind’ principles in climate action and sustainable energy. The impact of climate change on displaced populations is rarely brought up in climate negotiation agenda. Therefore, UNITAR’s Global Platform
for Action on Sustainable Energy in Displacement Settings (GPA) made efforts to raise awareness of humanitarian energy in the climate action discussions.

UN CC:LEARN BRINGS CLIMATE CHANGE EDUCATION TO THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE DURING COP 27

During the 27th Conferences of the Parties (COP27) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), UN CC:Learn organized another edition of the Climate Classroom, the series of 45-minute lessons which have become the programme’s flagship initiative during COP. Following the successful format of 2021, most classes were held online and open to the broad public.

SOLVING CLIMATE CHANGE, WATER RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND PROMOTING ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Dr Sameh W. Al-Muqdadi, a German Iraqi leading expert
in water resources management, is helping more Iraqis
to implement safer environmental practices, especially
to preserve water. Seeing how governance and politics affect water resources and the role natural resources play in conflict as well as in peacebuilding, Sameh seeks to build fellow Iraqis’ capacity to advance environmental protection, water resource management and climate-change action.

UN CC:LEARN AND TEDxGENEVA BRING REGENERATION
TO THE FOREFRONT OF THE CLIMATE DISCUSSION

The word regeneration has environmental, social, economic, and even psychological connotations. All of which imply
a rupture of an old way of thinking and its replacement with another one. And what if regeneration was the answer
to biggest crisis of our time? This is what the November edition of TEDxGeneva aimed to answer through TEDx Talks on how regeneration and its multiple facets could play a role in ramping up action on climate change.

PREPARING FOR COP27 NEGOTIATIONS WITH CLIMATE CHANGE DIPLOMACY TRAININGS

In preparation for the COP27 climate negotiations, UNITAR trained the fellows of the Climate Vulnerable Forum on various aspects of Climate Change Diplomacy. The representatives of the member states of the most climate-vulnerable nations engaged in international negotiations training including UNFCCC simulated negotiations, media training on the skills required to disseminate information
to a wider international audience outside of policy circles
and revised key concepts of adaptation, finance, loss and damage, and mitigation.

HOW UNITAR IS CONTRIBUTING TO PREPARING NEW LEADERS FOR THE FUTURE?

COP 27, the 2022 UN Climate Change Conference, was held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt this year. As a representative of the training arm of the UN Community in New York, UNITAR worked hard this year to insure that our work paralleled
the subjects addressed at COP27 to give the necessary tools and skills to our partners and beneficiaries to help protect our environment and build a safer future for the generations
to come.
