At the peak of the pandemic, UNITAR faced undoubtedly one of its most significant challenge of its history, by having to transfer the majority of its activities online. It is a well-accepted fact that diplomacy relies consequentially on informal face-to-face interaction. As Mr. El-Haddad, Director of the Division for Multilateral Diplomacy (DMD), once put it: “Diplomacy cannot be efficient and effective unless it is conducted face-to-face”. For the DMD, which specializes in training diplomats, transferring face-to-face activities online was certainly a momentous challenge.

Education and learning have been severely disrupted in light of what is happening around the world. The Learning Solutions team of UNITAR's Division for Peace is sharing tips and tools to help trainers, training institutions and others in the learning development field transform their events and workshops into the online format. We have published a series of downloadable tips including 'Methodological Tips for Online Events’, 'Guiding Questions for Designing Learning Events' as well as our brand new "Facilitation Cards" - an interactive digital tool allowing for more effective and participatory online meetings. SOLARKIOSK & UNITAR TO INCREASE COVID-19 RESPONSE CAPACITIES OF AFRICAN HEALTHCARE SYSTEMS THROUGH THE USE OF SOLAR ENERGY

In response to the persistent and unprecedented COVID-19 challenge and committed to the promotion of inclusive sustainable development, UNITAR and Solarkiosk have launched a multi-sectoral, multi-partner collaboration to support preparedness and response on the African continent, at the national level. This integrated multi-level public-private partnership aims to provide solar-powered equipment and infrastructure for screening, testing and treatment of the general population with the help of mobile, solar-powered laboratories. The project constitutes a real, practical and feasible solution that will help to tackle the growing COVID-19 risks in Africa, thereby saving thousands of lives.

UN CC:E-LEARN REACHES 300,000 USERS!

Last Saturday, the UN CC:e-Learn platform reached the important milestone of 300,000 registrations. This achievement came at a time when e-learning has experienced a boost due to the lock down measures implemented in many countries to contain the Covid-19 pandemic. With people shifting their learning habits towards e-learning, it took less than three months for 50,000 new users to register on the platform.

ONLINE ROAD SAFETY TRAINING IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19

Between March and April of this year, the RS GTI has turned its face-to-face High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) Training Programme into e-learning to be offered online in English and Spanish. The online component of the HVE Training Programme brings together expertise and experience gathered in the field to be delivered widely to government officials responsible for road safety and law enforcement. Law enforcement officers in countries around the world have participated in the programme since 2018, this is the first time the learning has been delivered online.

UNITAR AND FAO TO RELAUNCH ONLINE COURSE ON TRADE AND FOOD SECURITY (FRENCH)

Strong demand for the online course on Trade and Food Security has prompted UNITAR and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to relaunch the course in French for Sub-Saharan African countries. It was initially offered for Sub-Saharan African countries in French in 2018 and in English in 2019.

NEW ESA – UNITAR JOINT MASTER IN INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS AND DIPLOMACY

The UNITAR Division for Multilateral Diplomacy is thrilled to present its newest master’s degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy in cooperation with the Ecole Supérieure des Affaires (ESA) in Beirut. This year-long program set to start in October 2020, intends to deepen students’ understanding of international affairs and effectively prepare them for an exciting career in diplomacy.

CROWD4SDG – A NEW PROJECT ON CITIZEN SCIENCE TO MONITOR CLIMATE IMPACTS AND ACHIEVE CLIMATE RESILIENCE

Launched on 20 May 2020, a new consortium project Crowd4SDG will aim to examine opportunities for leveraging citizen science for monitoring climate impacts and achieving climate resilience. It is Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Action supported by the European Commission's Science with and for Society (SwafS) programme.

WHF & UNITAR PARTNER TO LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND THROUGH THE DIGITALIZATION OF EDUCATION

The renewed and expanded partnership between UNITAR Division for Peace and the World Humanitarian Forum (WHF) aims to address the limitations imposed by the pandemic to ensure training and development can be delivered uninterrupted and more importantly, to ensure that no one is left behind. In May, the two partners launched WHF Learning – an online platform that intends to increase the awareness of available free distance learning opportunities for professionals in the international community and beyond.

UNITAR AND THE INTERNATIONAL OCEAN INSTITUTE SIGN MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING

As a first step to future cooperation, UNITAR and the International Ocean Institute (IOI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The two institutions formally agreed to seek mutually beneficial cooperation to fulfil their respective missions. UNITAR and the IOI recognized their common purpose as high standing learning, training, and capacity-building institutes.

SIDA AND STANFORD UNIVERSITY SUPPORT UNITAR WOMEN ENTREPRENEURSHIP & AI PROGRAMME IN AFGHANISTAN AND IRAQ

UNITAR’s Division for Prosperity successfully completed a SIDA-funded pilot programme on “Frontier Technologies for Sustainable Development: Unlocking Women’s Entrepreneurship through Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Afghanistan and Iraq” which benefitted 32 women entrepreneurs from various sectors in the 2 countries.
