Knowing how to communicate effectively often decides whether a message will be heard and the extent to which that message will influence listeners. Great communicators – leaders who impact our lives and the decisions we make – know that to reach our hearts and minds, they must speak with authenticity and passion. Fortunately, public speaking is a skill that can be learned and mastered with concentrated effort. This workshop intends to uncover the art of effective speaking so that delegates at permanent missions to the United Nations in New York can perform their responsibilities with confidence and efficacy.

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Systematically structure and prepare an effective presentation or speech;
  • Further refine the technical, argumentative and psychological aspects of verbal communication with the aim of enhancing their overall public speaking and presentation skills;
  • Apply the acquired understanding in the diplomatic context.

The workshop is conducted by an experienced trainer in the area of international policy and communication and consists of six modules:

  • Elements of effective communication and argumentation;
  • Preparing and delivering a high-impact presentation;
  • Mastering questions and answers;
  • Leveraging non-verbal communication;
  • Overcoming public speaking stress and anxiety;
  • Communicating in an international environment.

The workshop takes a participatory and practice-oriented approach and is highly interactive. It engages participants through presentations, individual speaking exercises and video playback peer critique. Participants also receive study materials to enhance their holistic understanding about public speaking.

The workshop is designed for members of the permanent missions to the United Nations in New York. Other individuals are welcome to attend, including representatives of international, intergovernmental, and non-governmental organizations.

Members of the Permanent Missions accredited to the United Nations in New York who wish to participate in this workshop are requested to register online at http://www.unitar.org/event/new-york.

The course participation fee is 400 USD. Diplomats from least developed countries (LDCs) and developing countries are eligible to apply for a fellowship. If you wish to apply for a fellowship (fee-waiver), please contact the UNITAR New York Office (info [at] unitarny.org (info[at]unitarny[dot]org)) upon completion of online registration.

Participants may pay individually per course attended, or, for diplomats / officials, their government may wish to cover the costs of an annual subscription. More information about UNITAR’s core diplomacy training (CDT) pricing policy is available at http://www.unitar.org/mdp/cdt.

Important: Upon completion of online registration, applicants will receive an automated invoice, which will allow them to make full payment for their UNITAR course(s), unless a fellowship application is pending. Participation will be confirmed once payment is received. Participants are required to make payment by wire transfer or check. UNITAR reserves the right to rescind an applicant's enrolment at any time in case of non-receipt of payment.

All participants who successfully complete the workshop will receive a UNITAR Certificate of Participation.
