CIFAL Newcastle - Sustainable Development and the 2030 Development Agenda
The Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development is a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity. It also seeks to strengthen universal peace in larger freedom. All countries and all stakeholders, acting in collaborative partnership are committed to implement this plan.
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets demonstrate the scale and ambition of this new universal Agenda. They seek to build on the Millennium Development Goals and complete what they did not achieve. They seek to realize the human rights of all and to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. They are integrated and indivisible and balance the three dimensions of sustainable development: the economic, social and environmental.
The Goals and targets will stimulate action over the next 15 years in areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet.
This course introduces students to the guiding principles of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their application within organisations – public, private and not-for-profit. Students are able to document an organisational strategic plan that addresses specific targets and formulates appropriate metrics to verify the impact of the goals.
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain the development of the UN SDGs and their function in guiding development activities
- Analyse and explain the relationship between goals, targets and indicators within the UN SDG framework
- Develop and apply a range of UN SDGs as part of the strategic plan for an organisation, connecting organisational goals to those of the 2030 Development Agenda
- Historical development of the sustainable development domain including precursor frameworks (eg, UN Millennuim Development Goals)
- Parallel development frameworks that impact upon the UN SDGs (eg, New Urban Agenda, Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction)
- Implications for municipal governments including development controls, urban planning mechanisms and resilient development principles
- Implications for private sector organisations including zero carbon production, corporate social responsibility and triple bottom line value chain management
- Implications for non-government organisations including social justice, social enterprise and community engagement
- The UN SDGs, targets, and indicators across a range of organisations found within society.
This course is a minimum of 2 contact hours per week for 12 weeks and assessment items specific to the content. Assessable items include report writing, projects, reflective journals and teamwork.
The target audience is those who work in a role related to business continuity, emergency management, risk management, workplace health and safety resilience management, disaster recovery planning or simply wish to progress into such a role this program will broaden your outlook, increase your knowledge, and provide you with an unrivalled, internationally recognised and certified skill set.
Participants successfully completing the course will receive a UNITAR certificate.
