This map illustrates potential oil observed at the surface of River Gambia in Kombo East, Kombo Central and Kombo North/St Marie Districts, Brikama Region, as observed from Sentinel-1 imagery acquired on 29 May 2022 at 19:17 UTC. Following the incident of an oil spill through a ruptured submerged pipe during a transfer into the River Gambia from the main fuel depot, about 5 km2 of floating oil is potentially detected within the analyzed area of about 400 km2.
This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send
ground feedback to the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT).
Important Note: Oil spill analysis from radar images may overestimate the presence of floating oil due to backscattering properties of the radar signal.
