The Honourable Hidehiko Yuzaki, Governor of Hiroshima Prefecture and long-time supporter of UNITAR recently vsiisted the United States of America, joining representatives of the Institute in both Washington and New York. The trip took place between 7 and 9 November 2011. The purpose of the visit was to engage in high-level meetings outlining Hiroshima Prefecture's new Hiroshima for Global Peace Plan.

A meeting also took place between the Honourable Governor and the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to the United States of America, H.E. Eklil Hakimi. This reflects the deep relationship between Hiroshima and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, forged through the UNITAR Fellowship for Afghanistan programme.

Pictured with U.S. Senators Tom A. Coburn (Oklahoma), Saxby Chambliss (Georgia) and Richard Burr (North Carolina), accompanied by other members of the delegation. The Governor briefed the Senators on the new phase of the partnership between UNITAR and Hiroshima Prefecture aimed at building capacity in post-conflict nations.

Wednesday November 9, 2011 | New York City

A meeting between the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Governor took place on November 9 in New York to discuss the recently launched Hiroshima Global Peace Initiative. Pictured above is H.E. Ban Ki-moon with the Honourable Hidehiko Yuzaki. Accompanying them are the Japanese Ambassador to the United Nations, the Head of the UNITAR Hiroshima Office and the Head of the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs.

Following this, a lunch meeting was held with H.E. Dr. Zahir Tanin, Permamanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to the United Nations and H.E Dr. Hamid Al Bayat, Permamanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations.
