The event will take place on Tuesday, 12 October 2021 from 10:00 am - 11:30 am EST.

In addressing food security, hunger, and food production vulnerability, the role of agriculture is crucial for addressing challenges of climate change and equity. Innovation and investment in sustainable agriculture can work to curb carbon emissions as well as enhance the framework for just transitions. SDG 2 Zero Hunger, SDG 9 Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and SDG 13 Climate Action are discussed. Governments and international organizations can deploy new production technologies to increase crop yields, organize forums for farmers at the village level, and represent the stakeholder demands to governing bodies. Tribal communities, landless people, and other marginalized groups are impacted by commercial logging, corporate agricultural farming, and the extractive industries. For example, the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) considers issues of land degradation related to fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation, and land use.  The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) coincides with UNEP’s evaluation based on farming practices, irrigation, deforestation, and industrial activities. Developing an understanding of issues facing small farmers will assist governments and international organizations to synergize solutions and community engagement for more favorable outcomes. This panel will discuss methods to improve innovation and implementation of sustainable farming and land management techniques and incorporate them in multilateral environmental diplomacy efforts.
