As novel global challenges destabilise and deeply affect organisations throughout the world, UNITAR seeks to continue its mission in providing quality adult education aimed at strengthening capacity building. In this context, UNITAR is therefore pleased to partner again with the Conflux Center in implementing and delivering an innovative online course on Public Speaking and Speechwriting Skills for Multilateral Diplomacy: Cases and Insights from the United Nations.

The selected online course aims at strengthening the individual capacity of growth-oriented professionals working in a multilateral diplomatic professional environment, who are or aim to be in highlevel roles requiring pivotal professional skills such as public speaking and speechwriting.

The overall objective of the project is to enable participants to strengthen their professional skills in the workplace as well as developing external partnerships with other like-minded actors in the fields of persuasive public speaking and speechwriting skills for multilateral diplomacy. The online training will focus on deepening participants’ knowledge and provide guidance on how to better integrate one’s own public speaking skills related to speechwriting at their respective multilateral working environment. Through the online activity, UNITAR and the Conflux Center intend to strengthen the participants’ knowledge to further improve their high-level public speaking and speechwriting competences. Specifically, the online course will be beneficial to identify and examine the essential professional qualities needed to sustain the world of multilateral diplomacy.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Apply public speaking, presentation, speechwriting, and reporting techniques, – including preparation, structure, and delivery - in face-to-face and online formats;
  • Acquire essential principles of the art and craft of speechwriting and delivering speeches;
  • Identify their personal strengths and weaknesses as presenters and writers;
  • Develop their personal presentation style and tailor it to respective audiences;
  • Demonstrate the ability to use voice and words to effect when giving speeches or presentations: wording, diction, intonation, rhythm, and pacing;
  • Implement acquired tools for combating public speaking anxiety.

Given its core purpose, the course will take place via the online platform Zoom. The activities will be designed to be highly interactive, characterised by a similar format to face-to-face courses. As a result, a similar level of engagement will be guaranteed through simulations, group exercises and discussions, hands-on assignments whenever possible, and Q&A sessions.

Therefore, UNITAR and the Conflux Center have designed and developed an online course for professionals to better structure their approach to their own professional style, build resilience, and be self-motivated during these times of ambiguity. The ultimate objective of the online training suite is to help individuals to strengthen their resilience under uncertainty, and to work efficiently.

The aim of the UNITAR – Conflux Center Online Course on Public Speaking and Speechwriting Skills for Multilateral Diplomacy: Cases and Insights from the United Nations is to identify areas participants need to improve, in order to give the impression of spontaneity and confidence while delivering their message to an audience as well as how to make the content of their speeches pertinent and highly engaging. Drawing on the latest modern techniques in the ancient art of rhetoric (the skill of oration and persuasion) and writing, the trainers provide the staff with feedback enabling them to make immediate adjustments and improvements during the online training at a behavioural - rather than only at a theoretical - level. Additionally, highly experienced guest speakers from various backgrounds will share their unique experiences in public speaking and speechwriting providing participants with bestpractice examples to solving unforeseen challenges in the field of multilateral diplomacy.
