Multiple challenges restrict the exercise of effective leadership in peacebuilding contexts. International peacebuilding policies and practice do not sufficiently reflect the real challenges of building sustainable peace in conflicted, polarised and violent societies. This five-day senior leadership course provides an opportunity for senior leaders, both uniformed and civilian, serving in AMISOM to enhance their understanding of sustainable peacebuilding and the leadership styles that can be deployed to achieve the desired peace keeping results. They will also learn how to apply this Knowledge and skills to their specific tasks in the mission.

The course aims to equip AMISOM senior mission leaders both individually and collectively with the attitudes, skills, knowledge and managerial acumen that will enable them to;

  • Explore and utilise context-based leadership styles and skills that effectively address peacebuilding challenges
  • Challenge themselves in a safe environment on how to share lessons learned and how to build sustainable networks
  • Enhance comprehensively their understanding of the challenging dynamics of sustainable peacebuilding
  • Demonstrate the full understanding of core values and competences of the United Nations and AU

At the end of the course, learner should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the complexities and contexts of sustainable peacebuilding
  • Define the necessity of and the need for gender mainstreaming in peacebuilding
  • Apply the Leadership styles and skills needed to surmount peacebuilding challenges
  • Outline the latest insights in sustaining peacebuilding
  • Share lessons learned on collaborative mechanisms in peace building
  • Develop the capacity to network with other organisations and support partners in peacebuilding
  • Demonstrate the capacity to develop collaboration with other agencies in the field of peacebuilding for sustained development

The 3-days course is comprised of five modules

  • Module 1 : Leadership for peacebuilding
  • Module 2 : Applied leadership
  • Module 3 : Sustainable peacebuilding
  • Module 4 : Gender and leadership
  • Module 5 : Collaborative challenges for peacebuilding

The course is designed as a broad strategy geared towards ensuring the strengthening of the overall impact of peace keeping leadership in mission situations. The learning is designed to cover both the theory and practical dimensions essential to ensuring efficiency and effectiveness by the leaders deployed in the mission, building on good practices and lessons learned.

In order to create collective knowledge and to facilitate interaction and experience sharing among participants, Case studies, discussion and plenary forums, visual Aids, videos and exercises will also constitute part of the trainings.

The course is designed to benefit the Senior Leaderships of AMISOM and the African Union Uniformed personnel serving in Somalia.
