The world we live in is undergoing fundamental change in every way imaginable. The degree of interconnectedness at all levels, from everyday human interactions to business to trade to government has become an inevitability. Individuals and organizations constantly need to be engaged in developing their cross-cultural competences in order to operate effectively in a multilateral setting and avoid barriers, misunderstandings and prejudices in negotiation and mediation processes. Moreover, the understanding of cultural differences enhances the interactions within international relations and consequently leads to more constructive outcomes.

The most common features of globalisation are the movements of money, ideas, goods, information and power. Globalisation is fundamentally expressed not in vague and incoherent terms but in the coming together of one human with one or more others. To focus on humans and the way in which we engage with each other is to see the forces of globalisation play out at the level of the individual and the social.

Humans have never lived in isolation from one another, as hundreds of years of global exchange attest. Nonetheless, the reach of these dynamics is more profound for those of us living in the twenty-first century than ever before, especially after the outbreak of COVID-19. Although the digital era in which we live bestows us upon the avoidance of utter isolation from one another,  this pandemic has undoubtedly depicted a great challenge on globalisation.

Our ability to respond adequately to, and to thrive in, this context requires a paradigm shift in how we think about the world around us. To thrive in a world of blurred boundaries, people need to gain attributes that will enable them to become border dwellers, adopting a multi-perspectival standpoint.

The general objective of this e-Workshop is to reinforce negotiation and communication strategies to engage different stakeholders across various cultures, as well as tackling the differences between negotiation styles of different cultures and communication differences between age groups. Additionally, it will explore tools and techniques to effectively manage constructive conversations in an intercultural environment.

This e-Workshop will take place at 19.00 to 22.00 HKT from 25 to 28 January 2021, and will discover different themes of Cosmopolitan Communication. The course is highly interactive and allows participants to develop not only knowledge, but also practical skills and a helpful cosmopolitan communication mindset. It draws heavily on real life negotiation and communication examples from the world of international business across various cultures.  All participants will take part in highly interactive exercises in order to further enhance the participants’ understanding of the topic.
