The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) was established in 1965 as an autonomous body within the United Nations with the purpose of enhancing the effectiveness of the work of the United Nations and its Member States in the fields of peace and security and in the promotion of economic and social development. UNITAR designs and conducts worldwide close to 500 different training and knowledge sharing events per year for some 50,000 beneficiaries, including diplomats and other government officials, non-governmental representatives, local authorities and other stakeholders. The Institute works primarily in six broad thematic areas, including strengthening multilateralism, promoting economic development and social inclusion, advancing environmental sustainability, promoting peace and increasing resilience and humanitarian action and strengthening the implementation of Agenda 2030. Additional information on UNITAR programming can be found at

At the heart of UNITAR, the Division for Multilateral Diplomacy delivers training and support workshops to address the needs of diplomats, government officials, international civil servants and private sector meet complex, global challenges. UNITAR’s Division for Multilateral Diplomacy activities cover a wide range of policy domains, including bilateral and multilateral negotiation, environmental and climate change diplomacy, economic diplomacy, human rights, diplomatic protocol, Agenda 2030 and other related topics, as well as capacities and skills development activities such as diplomatic report writing, public speaking, media relations and negotiation techniques, among many others.

This learning event will focus on deepening training techniques and methods, on the implementation of training sessions as well as on principles for professional executive education. By implementing this training workshop, UNITAR intends to build and strengthen participants’ training skills and techniques for future training sessions organised and delivered by the participants of this workshop.

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  •  Develop, structure and draft effective and persuasive presentations;
  •  Recognise and take into account personal learning styles;
  •  Adapt presentations to different target audiences;
  •  Apply design techniques of a training and distinguish its various forms and styles.

The objective is to enable participants to provide internal training for their colleagues, as well as develop external partnerships with other actors in the field of training. This workshop will focus on deepening training techniques and methods, on principles for professional executive education, as well as on the implementation of training sessions.

The training style follows the logic of learning by doing. Participants will be familiarized with the essential elements required to prepare and structure training activities through practical and participatory activities. Participants will also gain an understanding and analysis of their strengths and weaknesses as trainers and of areas for potential improvement.

This course is open to diplomats and officials affiliated with Diplomatic Academies, as well as trainers in diplomacy wishing to strengthen their training skills and methodlogies.

UNITAR reserves the right to make a selection amongst candidates.
