Psycho-social education and training / training of military personnel (advanced course) - Pre-deployment Training and Advisory Team (Consultant)
UNITAR Division for Peace groups together all programming in the fields of conflict prevention, peacemaking, peacekeeping, and peacebuilding to provide the most comprehensive support to the promotion of peace, justice, and strong institutions worldwide, thereby essentially advancing the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 16. In the view of promoting Democratic Governance and Human Rights, PTPU focuses on offering innovative capacity-building and knowledge-management solutions for broad range personnel (including uniformed personnel, representatives of regional and international organizations, United Nations staff, women peacemakers, minority and indigenous peoples’ representatives) working towards sustaining peace, while ensuring that these activities meet the specific needs of conflict-affected and post-conflict countries.
The objective of the “Support to the Establishment of the Psychiatric Unit of Malian Armed Forces (FAMA)” project is to contribute to improving the safety and security of male and female members of Malian Armed Forces – FAMA (prior, during and after deployment). Within their respective areas of specialization, UNITAR and partners will collaborate in the implementation of a series of activities that are clustered around three major tiers: Rehabilitation of physical infrastructures; Reinforcement of knowledge, skills, behaviors, and attitudes of medical and paramedical personnel; as well as Raising awareness of members of FAMA on the symptoms and consequences of trauma-related disorders.
General Objectives of the Contract
The Pre-deployment Training and Advisory Team is seeking for qualified candidates to support the delivery of an advanced training programme for the existing and newly associated personnel of the psychiatric unit of Malian Armed Forces.
The advanced program will be delivered in the form of short seminars (maximum of 6 hours per seminar), from 12 October to 21 November 2020*. The seminars will be organized at the rate of 1 seminar/week (disseminated over the week). In addition to attending the seminar, participants will be requested to complete a short work-based assignment every week, to ensure full integration of the themes covered by the seminars.
The seminars will cover the following modules: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) (including international treatment guidelines); Addiction (including international treatment guidelines); Depression (including international treatment guidelines); Behavioural disorders; Systemic approaches (families and communities); Self-care / mutual care and team support.
The seminars will be held virtually, hence the consultancy contract will include only training fees.

Responsibilities/Description of Professional Services
In view of the delivery of the training course, the consultant shall:
Prior to the course:
- Support with the design and development of training material and training sessions.
During the course:
- Deliver selected sessions of the basic training programme in coordination with other trainers by 21 November 2020.
After the course:
- Submit a report outlining recommendations for curriculum improvement by 22 November 2020.

Performance Indicators for Evaluation of Results
Timely and quality submission of deliverables; activities implemented with a high degree of effectiveness and efficiency; and good to very good results on evaluation of training sessions, demonstrating a high degree of professionalism of the consultant and contributing to an increase in the professional image of the Institute.
Professionalism: Ability to work independently and as within a team and follow up on the project work-plan. Knowledge and understanding of UN system. Technical Competencies: has a very good understanding of adult learning theory and practice; has experience in the application of training standards, guidelines, and ethics; has a solid understanding of medical support in emergency settings; has a good understanding of roles and responsibilities in UN peace operations and standard operating procedures (SOPs); has a very good understanding of the UN system and its functioning (beyond peace operations).
Situational competencies: can understand, analyze, and attend to the many circumstances that make every intervention unique, including culture, stakeholders, and context; demonstrates flexibility and adaptability; demonstrate creativity and orientation towards solutions.
Interpersonal competencies: is able to communicate and interact effectively with all stakeholders; is able to work both independently and as part of a team; is able to work under pressure and with limited resources; demonstrates high level of discipline.
Reflective competencies: has awareness of his/her strengths and weaknesses as a trainer and is accustomed to self-reflection on his/her practice; has a strong motivation to develop as a trainer and values continuous learning and professional growth.
University degree and at least one year of specialized training in a relevant branch of psychology (psychopathology / behavioral psychology / clinical psychology / counseling psychology / developmental psychology / educational psychology / forensic psychology / personality psychology) are required.
At least 5 years of experience as trainer in the area of psychosocial education and training.
Fluency in French/English (written and verbal) is a requirement.
- Specialized training in trauma treatment is required. Certifications in EMDR and/or TF-CBT are highly desirable, as well as clinical experience.
- Experience in the security sector (military or related field) is considered as an asset; field experience is an asset.
- Fluency in any other UN language is an asset.
