5 February 2013, Lusaka, Zambia — A national workshop on the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) was held on 5 February 2013 in Lusaka, Zambia. The workshop brought together 59 participants from government, industry, civil society, and academia; representing the sectors related to the GHS, as well as a resource person from UNITAR. The workshop was an opportunity for participants to review the progress made by Zambia in terms of GHS implementation. It included the launch of the Zambian Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) website dedicated to GHS (http://www.zema.org.zm/GHS/), as well as the presentation of a documentary produced in collaboration with Zambian National TV on chemicals safety and understanding chemicals labels.

Discussions focused on the National GHS Implementation Strategy, which was endorsed during this meeting by a consensus among the stakeholders.

This event is part of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) project “Strengthening national capacities for SAICM Implementation and GHS Capacity Building in Zambia,” funded by the Quick Start Programme Trust Fund. It was hosted by the Zambian Environmental Management Agency.
