The content of the workshop was designed to meet particular challenges faced by a newly- elected member of the Security Council. As such, the workshop was organized in response to a specific request by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa for training in that area. “Being a Council member, official statements have to be prepared and delivered by our delegation on a daily basis. This creates an enormous demand on the experts in our mission to draft statements of a high standard with clear messages”, explained the political coordinator of the Mission of South Africa to the United Nations.

The workshop aimed at enhancing the understanding of main concepts of statement writing, the analysis of political and cultural contexts and the various stages in drafting a statement. Participants also analyzed case studies of selected webcasts from the Security Council, and were coached through the process of speech writing and delivery under real-time conditions. All participants expressed great satisfaction with the workshop, and commented that the course “was extremely useful” and the issues addressed during the workshop were “core to the skills required for statement writing ‘.
