UNITAR, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Eritrea and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Eritrea, organized the International Law Training for Government Officers from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Eritrea focusing on the Public International Law and the Law of the Sea.

This intensive and interactive two-week training course took place in Asmara from 9 to 20 November 2009.

The first week focused on the recent development of Public International Law and among others, the following topics were covered: Introduction to Public International Law, Recent Development in International Law in Africa, International and Regional Organizations, Sources of International Law and the Law of Treaties and International Court and Tribunals.

The second week of the training presented the law of the sea with a specific focus on the region.

This training activity was meant to be the continuation of the collaboration between UNITAR and the State of Eritrea that started with the organization and implementation of two eight-week Diplomacy Training for Government Officers from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Eritrea in 2006 and 2007, which were followed by two workshops on Foreign Policy Analysis and on Diplomatic Protocol in 2008.

The participants were government officials from several ministries and among them 14 were Ambassadors of the State of Eritrea.

At the end of the programme, UNITAR conducted a course evaluation. The results obtained were really encouraging as UNITAR received positive feedback from participants. Indeed, 76% of them considered that the overall objectives of the training programme were fully achieved. Furthermore, 82% of the trainees also considered that the knowledge acquired during this training activity will be useful in carrying out their professional tasks.
