1 March 2013, Musanze, Rwanda - Nineteen female and three male participants from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) successfully completed the Gender, Leadership and Peacebuilding Training of Trainers course that was jointly organized by UNITAR and the Rwanda Peace Academy.

This training activity was part of the larger programme that aimed to enhance the capacity of UNMISS local staff as a way to prepare them, from the early stage of the mission, for the exit strategy that will gradually empower women and men from South Sudan and leave a legacy in the newly created South Soudan.  In other words, the aim of the programme is to create a pool of individuals with the skills, knowledge and attitude that will enable the graduates of this programme through the Training of Trainers (ToT) to transfer the acquired knowledge to their communities in a language that is more easily understood, thereby developing a multiplier effect.

It is pertinent to also underscore that this joint event contributes to enhancing the spirit of building synergies between UN entities and promote the approach of “One UN”.

Obviously, the subject of the training course is very critical in the process of building effective and sustainable peace. In this regard, the Rwandan experience remains an eloquent case study from which post-conflict countries could draw lessons. As indicated by the UNMISS Chief Training Officer in his opening remarks on behalf of “One UN”:  “Nothing would have been better than bringing this programme to Rwanda, a nation that has gone through difficult moments and has now attained glory that is setting the pace for other African countries.”

This third course for the UNMISS local staff, and second delivered in collaboration with the Rwanda Peace Academy, has been a real success story in achieving the learning objectives and from the organizational aspect. Partner institutions (UNMISS and RPA), facilitators, and participants acknowledged the professionalism with which the training course was prepared and delivered.
