In the wake of the past eLearning Africa 2009 Conference (Dakar on May 27-29, 2009), UNITAR takes stock of past achievements in reaching out African participants through technologically intensive learning techniques such as e-Learning.

The percentage of African participants is quite significant. Despite logistical and technical difficulties, numbers show that e-learning is on an ascending trend as an educational means in Africa. UNITAR has been able to take measures of this growth.

According to 2008 internal statistics, the percentage of African participants among all, in the e-Learning course offered on Public Finance and Trade (PFT) was 78 percent (1303 out of 1670). These percentages are also considerable with regards to the 2008 courses on Governance in Urban Sanitation at 68% (75 out of 110 participants) and on Performing Effectively in Multilateral Conferences and Diplomacy at 46% (86 out of 186). Additionally, in the area International Environmental Law, the proportion of African participants that have completed the course doubled from 25 percent (36 out of 137) in 2007 to 51 percent (54 out of 105) in 2009, representing a total of 90 successful participants over a period of 2 years

The Institute, which has trained a total of 1554 African professionals in 2008, strives to offer learning technologies that respond to life-long training needs of officials from UN Member States and subnational or non-governmental institutions, and will increase its course offering in the near future.
