Background
When delegates join the Permanent Mission of their country to the United Nations, they have usually been provided with basic training on the Organization. This training, while most valuable, may prove to be insufficient when they have to face suddenly the realities of their new assignment. This one-week orientation, the longest-running course offered by UNITAR to the New York diplomatic community, aims at meeting this challenge.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the orientation course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the role and functions of the United Nations and its principal organs;
- Specify the functions of a permanent mission and the role of a diplomat in a multilateral setting;and
- Better understand the role and services performed by the United Nations Secretariat.
Content and Structure
The intensity of the course requires active involvement from all the participants. Each session includes a period for discussion and questions on points of specific interest to the participants. The course concludes with a simulation exercise on the negotiation and drafting of a United Nations resolution.
Methodology
Presentations are made by experienced diplomats and members of the Secretariat.
Targeted Audience
The course is intended for members of permanent missions who have never served in New York before and have not been assigned to their mission for more than a few months.
Additional Information
The course is free of charge for all members of permanent missions from a low-income or middle-income country according to the World Bank classification accredited to United Nations Headquarters. Other interested government officials; representatives of international, intergovernmental, and non-governmental organizations, and individuals may participate on a fee basis (550 USD).
