Building Knowledge Capacity

Coordination on Effective Capacity Development

In its role as co-convener of the capacity development work within the Global Migration Group (GMG) together with IOM, and training focal point with in the World Bank’s Global Knowledge Partnership on Migration and Development (KNOMAD), UNITAR is responsible for building an online inventory of training activities for the GMG (http://www.globalmigrationgroup.org/capacity-development-tools-and-activities) and KNOMAD Project (http://www.knomad.org).

These separate inventories serve to create an overview of capacity development work in the field of migration and better coordinate such activities, supporting the general goal of more coherence within the UN system. In 2015, these inventories will link up to the major inter-governmental convening, the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD).

Effective Learning

UNITAR’s mandate as co-chair of the GMG’s Task Force on Capacity Development was renewed in November 2014.  In its second mandate, UNITAR with IOM will develop training courses on new and emerging issues including protection at sea and migrants in crisis. (More information soon).

During its first mandate (2013-2014), UNITAR and IOM focused on engaging migration practitioners in reflection efficient learning.  As such in November 2013, they initiated the first discussion between migration practitioners, researchers and experts in learning (from American University and New York University) at the IOM Offices in New York. This first Workshop in a series funded by the World Bank, served to foster a better understanding of how to educate adult learners in the 21st Century. The Workshop focused on: forms of knowledge, pedagogical tools, strengthened needs assessments, and technology-enhanced learning. (The ProgrammeInformation Note and Summary of the Workshop.)

A second Workshop took place at IOM Headquarters in Geneva on 14 March 2014, on the margins of the 5thMeeting of the GFMD Steering Group and Friends of the Forum. It was open to KNOMAD and GMG constituents, interested government representatives, and pre-selected training experts. (The Programme and Summary of the Workshop.)

Online Courses

In 2015, UNITAR is building e-Learning courses on migration & mobility for UNITAR’s e-Learning catalogue, one of the most diverse and accessible e-learning outlets offered by the UN. UNITAR’s migration courses will incorporate the highly successful approach adopted by the annual “International Migration Law” Course implemented for 250 delegates at the UN since 2007, and the online Course on "Managed Mobility: Trade, Migration and Labour Movement," offered in 2012 by UNITAR and the World Trade Institute (WTI).
