Training Package "Defence Sector Reform in the UN"
In August 2011, the policy on Defence Sector Reform (DSR) has been approved by the Under- Secretary-General of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations. The policy was prepared by the Security Sector Reform Unit, in coordination with the Office of Military Affairs and the Inter Agency Security Sector Reform Task Force.
The new policy on DSR aims to support national efforts to enhance the effectiveness, efficiency, accountability and affordability of the defence sector and its components, in order to contribute to sustainable peace, security, good governance and development for the State and its peoples without discrimination and with full respect for human rights and the rule of law.
UNITAR New York Office, together with the DPKO SSR Unit and with support from the Permanent Missions of Denmark, Kenya, Malaysia and the Netherlands has produced a training package DVD on Defence Sector Refor in the UN in order to explain the concept of DSR and the role of the UN in this field as well as to advoctae for the inclusion of better defined DSR mandates for UN missions.
The DVD features different training materials, including a movie titled "DSR - The Tansformation to Accountable Armies", Power Point Presentations and background literature on DSR.

DVD "Quadrennial Comprehensive Policy Review (QCPR)"
Operational activities for development of the UN system are defined as those activities of the funds, programmes and specialized agencies which have the specific objective of promoting economic and social development in programme countries. In 2010, nearly two-thirds of all UN system-wide activities were operational activities for development.
The Quadrennial Comprehensive Policy Review (QCPR) is the mechanism through which the General Assembly assesses the effectiveness, efficiency, coherence and impact of UN operational activities for development and establishes system-wide policy orientations for the development cooperation and country-level modalities of the UN system.
During this year, UNITAR’s New York Office carried out a course series on the QCPR, with the support of the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations, and contribution of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA). The goal was to provide delegates and UN staff an opportunity to examine in greater depth a number of technical issues central to the QCPR, and to support preparations for the upcoming intergovernmental negotiation process. The DVD represents the culmination of this collaborative effort.
