UNITAR reskills/upskills women and youth in conflict and post-conflict countries on digital technologies, to address the digital divide and gender and education gaps. Through our programmes, women and youth are equipped with the technical and leadership skills to engage with the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), get or create jobs, and contribute to an inclusive, sustainable society.
We engage with leading universities, tech companies, and experts from around the world to bring our learners the most cutting-edge training and expertise.
In 2021, nearly 2,200 women and young people in Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Guinea, Iraq, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Senegal learned about digital technologies and how to use them to address critical needs in their communities.
The programme was piloted in 2020 with 32 women entrepreneurs in Afghanistan and Iraq. The participants showed a 59% increase in their level of confidence in running a gender-sensitive start-up business using artificial intelligence. All intended to use their new knowledge and skills to empower other women and mobilize youth, create job opportunities, and address their society’s problems.
The world is rapidly changing around us, and technology is pushing the frontiers of what can be done in all spheres of life. Frontier technologies herald great hopes for humanity, with the possibility to address the challenges for people, prosperity, and the planet.
Digital Upskilling and Reskilling
Afghanistan
Open to all Afghan women, the programme aims to create opportunities for participants to address growing wage gaps, the digital divide, and new challenges in the post-COVID-19 work environment. By the end of the programme, participants will be able to transform their entrepreneurial ideas into digital products to empower others and effectively address gender-specific needs and critical issues in their communities.
The training will be locally contextualized and delivered fully online. Trainees will be able to learn at their own pace, working on self-directed projects while engaging with thematic and regional experts, mentors and peers online.
Iraq
Empowering women in Iraq through digital reskilling towards better employment opportunities. The training covers topics on 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR), economic empowerment, innovation, gender inclusion and Sustainable Development Goals.
Sahel Region
The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) sought to empower people in the Sahel to take advantage of the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) and address the pandemic-exacerbated challenges in their communities.
Open to women and youth from Sahelian countries (Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, and Senegal), the programme sought to empower motivated professionals, students, and entrepreneurs, especially women and youth from the more marginalized communities, and to digitally upskill or reskill them. With key relevant knowledge and skills, they would be able to win stronger economic prosperity for their families and communities.
