Overview
UNITAR
UNITAR’s Programme on Health and Development (PHD) aims to be a comprehensive capacity-building initiative supporting health-stakeholders to systematically identify knowledge gaps and develop capacity to enhance the impact of existing health initiatives and programmes.
Structural limitations of the health sector and barriers to accessing adequate structures and services for health, compromise people’s productive capacity and, consequently, their ability to contribute to social and economic development.
Capacity Building is an important instrument in tackling social health inequities by enhancing the capacity of organizations at national, regional and local levels to address the social determinants of the health inequalities. A trained workforce of health professionals is essential, but for many reasons, there is currently a lack of adequate capacity. This has been well articulated recently in many arenas, including ‘The World Health Report 2006: Working Together for Health’.
Our mission is to strengthen national and local capacity to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being at all ages and all levels of society.

The Programme on Health and Development is an initiative offers the following services and products to its beneficiaries:
- Capacity Building
- Leverage capacity-building to directly support global and national initiatives aimed at improving people’s well-being
- Online Training Tools
- Provide a portfolio of high-quality training materials to build capacities of stakeholders from the health community
- Awareness Raising
- Offer a digital repository of knowledge to provide easy access to health-related best-practices, materials and tools

Global Surgery
UNITAR
Despite the obvious need, there is presently no coordinated research or funding strategy to support the development of surgical and trauma care in Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) such as that which exists with the Global Fund for HIV, Malaria and TB.
UNITAR seeks to contribute to ensuring access to Safe and Affordable Surgery for all people.
Nutrition
UNITAR
Facing the global nutrition challenges, the UNITAR teamed up with the World Health Organization (WHO) to design technical and functional capacities of WHO staff and stakeholders through e-learning courses and key nutrition-related training and knowledge materials.

Digital Health
UNITAR
UNITAR's Division for People and Social Inclusion is launching its Digital Health Initiative to encourage and facilitate the sustainable, safe and responsible development and adoption of digital health products amongst international organisations, NGOs, the private sector and government organisations.
The initiative also aim to build capacity among health care workers, local governments, publics, and other end users in the uptake and use of strong digital health tools.
Mental Health
UNITAR
The Mental Health Initiative of the Division for People and Social Inclusion, together with the CIFAL Global Network, aims to raise awareness surrounding mental health as a key component to achieve sustainable development and facilitate the exchange of knowledge on strategies to address issues supporting scalable psychological interventions for adversity-affected communities and people.

Communicable Diseases
UNITAR
UNITAR's Division for People and Social Inclusion is currently scaling up its Communicable Disease Initiative, which seeks to serve as a global platform to facilitate collaboration and knowledge exchange amongst international experts, policy makers and health care workers to implement practical solutions to address of communicable diseases.
It will aim to provide support in light of
- Governments’ struggle to enforce measures while keeping economies running
- Rapid spread of misinformation
- Similarities and differences between countries in terms of outbreak impacts

Vaccination and Immunization
UNITAR
UNITAR's Division for People and Social Inclusion is teaming up with its CIFAL Global Network to further develop its Vaccination and Immunization Initiative , which aims to build capacity for the effective management and use of vaccines amounts health practitioners world wide.
The target beneficiaries are:
- Ministry of Health staff
- Front-line Healthcare Providers, and
- Communities & Civil Society.

Universal Health Coverage
UNITAR
UNITAR's Division for People and Social Inclusion is currently scaling up its Universal Health Coverage Initiative, which seeks to provide support for developing countries to improve their data collection, management and analysis in order to improve national UHC data available.
