Although highly visible human rights violations, such as censorship, arbitrary arrests and summary executions, may cause temporary instability, the sustained denial of human rights embedded in the structure of society and governance is what inevitably leads to violent conflict. Human rights are an expression of basic human needs connected to identity, welfare, freedom and security, which are fundamental for human survival. The systemic denial of these rights results in the continuous frustration of these needs, which leads to conflict and various manifestations of violence.
